Noah perched in a high corner of the energy center, watching Ethan lift the broken machine to its table. He should leave, get back to his place before the monster sought him out. He’d gone against its will by distracting Ethan and the thing would be angry. But he had to stay behind to make sure the creature didn’t try to go for Ethan again.

The geologist finished righting the machine in its place and returned to his computer. Peculiar how Ethan never saw his ghostly self, even though he’d stood there, plain as day, after upsetting the machine. Noah didn’t even have to try to make himself invisible to the geologist. Ethan’s disbelief in the spirit world was so strong he wouldn’t see a ghost if it danced before his nose.

Nevertheless, the monster seemed right interested in Ethan, had come for him three times now. But where the creature had so easily made the others afraid, Ethan was another matter. It seemed to have other intentions for the geologist. Not to scare him, but maybe to use him. And that was a far more fearful thing to contemplate than any other of the monster’s deeds. If it could take hold of a living man, use his body... Oh, Lord, he didn’t want to think about it.

Noah peeked down at Ethan, saw a very ordinary look of concentration on his face. Then he tested the air, the very rock about him for the least inkling of the monster. Once he’d assured himself it was well and truly gone, Noah let his non-corporeal self soak into the rock above him and away.
